The world’s first robot
The world's first robot is a subject of debate and interpretation due to the different definitions and interpretations of what constitutes a robot. However, one widely recognized candidate for the world's first robot is the "Unimate" created by George Devol and Joseph Engelberger in the late 1950s.
Unimate was an industrial robotic arm designed for automating tasks on the assembly line. It was the first robot to be digitally controlled and programmable, and it revolutionized manufacturing processes. Unimate was first installed in a General Motors factory in 1961, where it performed tasks such as handling hot metal and welding car bodies.
While Unimate was not a humanoid or anthropomorphic robot that we often imagine, it laid the foundation for robotic automation and introduced the concept of programmable machines capable of performing repetitive tasks. It sparked the development and advancement of robotics as we know it today.
